Bandipora, Jun 8: Carrying empty pots on their heads, women blocked the Srinagar-Bandipora highway to stage a protest over water shortage in Suderkoot-Bala village of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Tuesday.
Women from Suderkoot-Bala village staged a sit-in protest today morning with empty pots on their heads and said that for the last 15 days they have not been able to get a single drop of water to drink.
“We are being deceived. For the last 15 days, we have been informing the Jal-Shakti department that we are not getting drinking water but no action has been taken by them so far,” Taja an elderly lady said.
Saleema, another protesting woman, said that a few days ago, the administration had sent a water tanker which did not suffice the need of the entire village.
“Why are the concerned departments forcing us to take to the streets,” she said.
Meanwhile, the women’s sit-in in the area caused massive traffic jams for few hours. The protesters dispersed after getting an assurance from officials that their problem would be looked into at the earliest.
