Srinagar, Aug 17: Unknown gunmen, suspected to be militants, shot dead a BJP worker in Kulgam district of south Kashmir on Tuesday.
A police spokesman said that at about 1630 hours, militants fired on a civilian in Brazloo Jageer area of District Kulgam.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that (militants) barged into the house of a civilian identified as Javid Ahmad Dar (Contractor by profession) resident of Brazloo and fired indiscriminately upon him,” the spokesman said.
“In this incident, he received critical gunshot injuries and died on spot,” he said, adding, “As claimed by BJP party spokesman deceased person was BJP worker. As per district police no one approached for security and even local BJP leader didn’t share his name in the list of PPs. He (had) no protection,” the spokesman said.
He said police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law.
“Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this (incident)”.
He said area has been cordoned and search in the area is going on. “Police will identify the culprits and appropriate action would be taken at the earliest.”
Condemning the killing, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said he was “deeply anguished to hear about attack on political leader Shri Javaid Ahmad Dar at Brazloo, Kulgam.”
“I strongly condemn this cowardly attack. My deepest condolences to bereaved family in this time of grief,” he said, adding, “(militants) will never succeed in their nefarious designs, and those responsible for such heinous acts shall be brought to justice.”
Former Chief Minister and National Conference Vice President Omar in a tweet “unreservedly” condemned it.
“Terrible news from Kulgam. Javed Ahmed was gunned down in cold blood. I unreservedly condemn this terror attack & send my heartfelt condolences to Javed’s family and colleagues,” National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah said, adding, “May Allah grant him place in Jannat.”
People Conference president Sajjad Gani Lone also “unreservedly” condemned the killing of BJP worker in Kulgam. “I hope the killers are brought to justice soon. Share my condolences with the family of the deceased,” he said in a tweet.
Former Chief Minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti also condemned the killing of BJP leader Javaid Dar. “There is no place for such acts of violence. Sympathies & condolences to his family,” she said in a tweet.
CPI(M) leader Mohamad Yousuf Tarigami also condemned the killing and said that violence in any form is condemnable.
