Two militants killed in Rangreth encounter

Srinagar, Dec 13: Two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants including a foreigner were killed in a brief encounter at Rangreth area of Srinagar outskirts, police said Monday.
A police official said that acting on a tip-off about the movement of militants in Rangreth area of the city outskirts, Srinagar police laid a siege and established check-points. “Two suspected persons, after noticing the police party, fired at the police indiscriminately. In retaliation, both were killed,” the official said.
A police spokesman in a statement said that based on a specific input regarding movement of militants in the general area of Rangreth, surprise naka checking points were established tactically by Srinagar Police in the area. “During naka checking at one such naka manned by a small team of Srinagar Police, two suspected persons on noticing the police party fired indiscriminately upon them. However, the fire was effectively retaliated, leading to a brief encounter. In the ensuing encounter, two militants were neutralized on spot,” he said.
The spokesman said that one of the killed militants has been identified as Aadil Ahmad Wani son of Bashir Ahmad Wani, resident of Daramdoora, Shopian (a Pakistan trained “A” category militant) while as another killed militant as per the credible sources is a foreign militant, yet same is being further ascertained. Both the killed militants were affiliated with the LeT outfit.
“As per police records, both the killed militants were involved in several crime cases and civilian atrocities and played a key role in the number of recent killings in Srinagar City. Arms and ammunition including two AK rifles and other incriminating materials were recovered from the site of the encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other cases,” the police spokesman said.
He said in this connection police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated.
