Inmate dies in Kupwara jail

Kupwara, Jan 11: A jail inmate lodged at district jail Kupwara was on Tuesday morning found dead, officials said.
They said that a 30-year-old inmate identified as Khursheed Ahmad Wani son of Ghulam Mohammad Wani, a resident of Saidpora Sopore was found under mysterious conditions in the jail.
The officials said that the deceased was not keeping well for the last couple of days and his health conditions started to worsen from midnight following which he was moved to Sub District Hospital Kupwara where the medical team on examining declared him brought dead.
He said the inmate was lodged under a case filed against him under FIR number 52/2021 at the police station Kralgund U/S 366,109,498 IPC who was facing trial before additional sessions judge at Handwara.
Besides another case under FIR number 50/2021 at the police station, Kralgund was also registered against him U/S 457, 380, 511 IPC and the trial of same was ongoing before Cheif Judicial Magistrate Handwara, he further said.
He said that the deceased has an education qualification of 9th standard and was a laborer by profession.
The official further said that required medico-legal formalities have been initiated in this regard while the exact cause of the death is being ascertained.
Earlier in June last year, a jail inmate identified as Lateef Ahmed Mir son of Hamza Mir died at district Jail Kupwara who was arrested in case FIR No 15/2021 under section 376 (rape), 342 (wrong confinement) registered at police station Sopore.
