The holy month of Ramadhan is more pious than the other 11 months of Islamic calendar and Muslims in this month usually give Zakat and help the poor, destitute and other needy all across the globe. However, when it comes to Kashmir, the people belonging to the downtrodden section of the society are being pushed to the wall as the prices of essentials keep soaring despite authorities claiming to have enough measures to take action against the erring traders as well as ensuring fixed rates on the essentials. It has been witnessed yet again that the prices of kitchen staples including vegetables, mutton and chicken have shot up in Kashmir with the onset of the holy month of Ramadhan, thus simultaneously leaving the poor people to lurch at large. Buying essentials, especially eatables including fruits, vegetables and mutton at inflated rates is becoming almost unaffordable for the people, but there seem no takers for the sufferings of the poor section of the society as such happenings continue unabated. One fails to understand why such happenings are allowed in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley. There is a need to ensure that the unauthorized price rise is controlled forthwith so that the poor people are not forced to face hardships in the ongoing holy month of Ramadhan. Moreover, the market checking squads needs to be intensified on time to ensure that the skyrocketing prices of the essentials are controlled and the poor section of the society is served at least for this holy month.
