At least five ‘Ladies Special’ buses are already operational on many Srinagar routes, bringing respite to the womenfolk in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. However, the concerned Jammu and Kashmir Road Transport Corporation (JKRTC) is mulling to start a fresh survey on various Srinagar routes to determine whether more ‘Ladies Special Bus Service’ coaches are required. The decision to make more ‘Ladies Special’ buses operational is a welcome step and might have brought smiles on the faces of womenfolk, who from time to time have faced harassment while travelling on the different routers here. It is a much-needed decision and would certainly help the womenfolk from coming out of the depression they were facing in the local transport where the allegations of harassment have always been made by them. The fleet of more ‘Ladies Special’ buses must be ensured in the interiors of Srinagar and amid the complaints of non-availability of passenger vehicles in the evening hours; it can prove a breather for the women, who face tremendous hardships in late hours here to reach their destinations. Besides going for a survey, it is the high time for the administration to pay heed to the demands and grievances of the womenfolk, who have raised their voice for making the passenger vehicle available for them, especially in the evening hours. It is the high time to respect the voices from womenfolk and consider the operation of more such buses on Srinagar routes.
