Srinagar, Dec 31: Veteran politician and former lawmaker Nizamuddin Bhat was appointed as chairman of Peoples Conference’s parliamentary committee and incharge campaign committee on Saturday.
Bhat, who is one of the founders of the Peoples Conference, was appointed head of the PC’s key decision-making body in a bid to strengthen the party which has been revived by Sajad Gani Lone after 2014. “J&K Peoples Conference President Mr. Sajad Gani Lone is pleased to appoint Nizamuddin Bhat as Chairman Parliamentary Committee and Incharge Campaign Committee,” the party tweeted.
In a tweet, Bhat expressed hope that the entire team would work for collective interest under the leadership of Sajad Gani Lone.
“Trust reposed is trust upheld. Hope entire team works for collective interest under your stewardship,” Bhat tweeted.
Bhat started his political career from Peoples Conference. He fought 1983 and 1987 elections on the party ticket from Bandipora. By a narrow margin, he lost the 1987 election, which is widely believed to have been rigged.
After the armed conflict broke out in Kashmir in 1989, Bhat distanced himself from politics and started working for different national and international media outlets. He worked as bureau chief of ETV and The Islamic Republic News Agency or IRNA.
In 2003-04, Bhat returned to politics and joined PDP when PC was not part of electoral politics. He fought the 2008 assembly election and defeated Usman Majeed.
He returned to the Peoples Conference in October 2021.
In the DDC elections held in December 2020, Bhat ensured the victory of two candidates fielded by him and also helped allies to win seats in Bandipora.
