Since the prime locations are getting a new facelift in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, one fails to understand why the once prominent Choont Kul, situated close to the commercial hub Lal Chowk continues to remain away from the focus of the administration as the stream has been seemingly turned into a permanent garbage dumping site where a heaps of garbage could be seen piled up every day, changing the beauty of the stream with each passing day. Undoubtedly, the local residents, living close to the stream and also those owning shops nearby, are certainly the major responsible people for the present situation of Choont Kul, but what adds to the miseries is the ignorance of the incumbent authorities, who have failed to take immediate and necessary measures to preserve the stream for the future generation. The situation is worsening at a rapid pace and in case there is no immediate action by the authorities, the stream will soon become a history and may end up with subsequent consequences as well. The administration has been making efforts to give a new facelift to the major commercial hub, Lal Chowk in Srinagar, but it needs to bear in mind that all the adjacent places too deserve to be looked thoroughly and must be beautified to ensure that all the pivotal things and places will attract the people from all across. Therefore, the concerned authorities should also take measures in this regard and ensure that the once famous—Choont Kul is preserved and protected for the future generations and thus start a massive cleanliness drive at the place so that the stream can breathe again.
