A decade of Digital India

The government officials have recently made clear that the dredging under the phase-II of much-hyped flood management plan will not be carried out from Sangam in Anantnag to Asham in Bandipora as the study conducted by a Pune based Institute have given adverse report, claiming that the process would prove detrimental to the Srinagar City rather than proving fruitful. The flood management plan was started soon after the floods hit Kashmir in 2014. Under the project, the government intended to increase the capacity of the river Jhelum and several other streams. Though the dredging process was carried out in this regard under phase-I, the process could not be carried out due to the report by a Pune based Institute. One needs to understand what steps are imperative then to prevent the 2014 like situation in Kashmir as the dredging process was among the main steps to deal with such a situation. However, the details divulged by the officials in the media report, are testimony to the fact that there is no major step on cards else than using taking measures for protecting embankments, ditching and other related things, which would have been carried out on a larger scale by the government of Jammu & Kashmir itself. But, as the Union Government has provided a huge funds to the J&K administration in this regard, it is imperative for the concerned to conduct a massive survey and ensure that every possible step and the process is carried out to prevent 2014 like situation here, which would help in saving the precious lives as well as the properties of the people.
