Baramulla, May 6: A local militant affiliated with the Lashkar-e-Toiba was killed in an encounter that broke out during the wee hours on Thursday at Karhama Kunzer area in Baramulla.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla, Amod Nagpure said told media persons that on the basis of an input, a joint cordon and search operation by Army’s 02 Rashtriya Rifles, CRPF 176 BN and Police was launched at Karhama Kunzer area of Baramulla.
Soon after the joint party reached near to the spot, the militant who had taken shelter in a residential house opened indiscriminate firing upon them, triggering into an encounter.
A militant affiliated with the proscribed outfit LeT identified as Abid Wani son of Mohammad Rafiq Wani of Yarhol Babapora Kulgam was killed.
He said that one AK 47 rifle was recovered from the killed militant.
Asked about back-to-back anti-militancy operations and G20 Summit, the SSP said that the security forces have been kept on extra vigil in.
“We are ready to neutralize any threat. There is strong coordination among forces and security agencies which is helping in neutralizing threats. G20 Summit won’t get affected and will be organized successfully,” Amod said.
A case in this regard has been registered in a local Police Station and further investigations have been taken up.
The details pertaining to this case will be shared accordingly, the SSP added.
Today’s gunfight was the second in less than 48 hours in Baramulla district resulting in the killing of three militants.
In a statement, an army spokesperson said that the slain terrorist was part of a plan to target Srinagar- Gulmarg road. “Operation Karhama is a major achievement for the security forces in their efforts to ensure a stable security situation in the Kashmir Valley,” it said.
