Srinagar, Jul 18: Preparations for Muharram has started with people hoisting black banners and flags in Srinagar.
Muharram marks the arrival of the new year in Islamic lunar calendar. The tenth day of Muharram is called Ashura and Muslims commemorate the day as the martyrdom anniversary of Hazrat Hussain (RA) and his companions in Karbala.
Big black banners with quotes of Hazrat Hussain (RA) were hoisted at several places in the city.
The banners are mostly seen on the road stretch from Saida Kadal to Zadibal and Downtown and uptown of Srinagar.
“The youth are inspired by the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and are tying the hoisting on streets in Srinagar,” said a local.
Zamin from Alamgari Bazar said with the black banners rising in Srinagar’s, youth should understand lessons of sacrifice and unity that this sacred month teaches people.
