While there has been a rise in fatal accidents, there seems to be no consideration by the government over ensuring the mandatory facilities for the general public. Similarly, the erection of sign boards and painting of zebra crossings are among the basic needs that have to be ensured in a bid to reduce the road accidents. However, the situation is quite different in the Valley as barring a few places, these sign boards don’t exist anywhere, which puts a question mark over the government claims of taking measures to reduce the road accidents. The majority of roads here have witnessed fatal accidents, but no major change has been witnessed on the ground despite the government taking a series of steps so far to reduce the accidents. One fails to understand why the major and imperative part of the preventive measure has not been taken up properly. Most places including the busiest roads lack the sign boards and zebra crossing, which are among the causes behind the road accidents. The negligent attitude of the government in this regard has to be put to an immediate end as the government, especially the concerned department needs to gear up and ensure that all the major places and roads are painted well for the crossing purpose and also the adequate number of sign boards are erected here to put an end to the road accidents. The sign boards and proper zebra crossing in Srinagar and elsewhere will play a major role in reducing the number of accidents across Jammu & Kashmir, thereby the government must take immediate steps in this regard so that the precious lives of people are saved.
