Srinagar, Jan 13: The residents of Batwara locality here have expressed their concern over the alleged illegal sand extraction activities in their area.
The residents claim that this unauthorized extraction is causing environmental degradation and posing a threat to their surroundings, as the sand extraction is making the land loose.
Local residents said that they are observing heavy machinery and trucks operating in the area, extracting sand without proper authorization or adherence to environmental regulations.
“These activities are not only jeopardizing the ecological balance but also impacting the quality of life for those living in Batwara,” said Zahoor, a local resident.
“We have noticed a significant increase in sand extraction activities lately. This not only raises environmental concerns but also questions the legality of these operations. We urge the authorities to investigate and take necessary action,” added a local shopkeeper, whose shop is located on the Jhelum river side.
When contacted, an official at the Irrigation and Flood Control department told KNO that they are conducting regular drives and taking tough action against such illegal activities.
“We, along with officials from the geological and mining department and police officials, conduct surprise checks and raids after receiving complaints and necessary action will follow in this regard as well,” he added.
