Srinagar, Feb 7: A civilian, hailing from Amritsar was shot dead while another was injured by terrorists in Shaheed Gunj area of Srinagar, police said on Wednesday.
A top official said that two persons identified as Amritpal Singh & Rohit—both residents of Amritsar were fired upon by the terrorists in Shaeed Gunj, Srinagar.
However, the official stated that one among them Amritpal Singh has succumbed to his injuries while Rohit has been shifted to hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, a manhunt has been launched to nab the attackers. “The whole area has been cordoned off,” he added.
Kashmir Zone Police in a post on X said, “#Terrorists fired upon 2 persons identified as Amritpal Singh & Rohit, R/O Amritsar at Shaheed Gunj Sgr. In this #terror incident, Amritpal Singh succumbed to his injuries while Rohit has been shifted to Hospital for treatment. Area cordoned off.”
Authorities in the SMHS hospital said that one person has been brought to the hospital with bullet wounds, adding that the injured is being treated, and his condition is said to be critical.
He has received a bullet wound in left abdomen.
Meanwhile, the attack was condemned by the political parties in Jammu & Kashmir.
CPI (M) leader and former Kulgam legislator, Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the bereaved family.
“Condemning in no uncertain terms the despicable attack which left a non-local man dead and caused injuries to another in Srinagar. Such barbaric attacks on innocent civilians are reprehensible and absolutely devoid of humanity. Deepest condolences to his family !,” Tarigami said in a post on X.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expressed deep sorrow and condemned what it termed as the cowardly and shameful act of terrorism.
Senior BJP leader, Manzoor Bhat vehemently denounced the act, labeling it as a clear manifestation of terrorist frustration aimed at disrupting the peaceful environment and developmental progress in Kashmir.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Amrit Pal and conveyed prayers for the swift recovery of Rohit.
