Doda, Apr 13: With polling day for the first phase of 2024 Parliamentary elections just five days away and Udhampur-Doda constituency will be going for polls in this phase, Doda district is on the brink of making a history by welcoming over three dozen voters above the age of 100 years.
There are 37 voters in the district who are above the age of 100 years and are ready to vote during these elections.
Giving details, District Electoral Officer (DEO) Doda (Deputy Commissioner Doda), Harvinder Singh said, “We have 37 voters in the districts who are above the age of 100 years. We have made special arrangements for them to come and vote and wherever Palkis (Palanquins) are needed will be provided to them so that they come and vote.”
Out of the 37 such voters, the oldest stands at the age of 108 years.
There is a provision kept by the election commission of India to allow old people to cast their votes at their homes and for that purpose teams of ECI officials will be visiting their homes to cast the vote in advance.
But here in Doda all these above 100 years voters have decided not to cast their votes in their homes but to reach the polling stations near them and cast votes on April 19 when other voters will be casting their votes.
The Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha constituency is going for the polls during the first phase of parliamentary elections and there is a direct contest between the incumbent Member Parliament (MP) of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) Dr. Jitendra Singh and two-time former MP and Congress candidate Choudhary Lal Singh. Both the parties have done campaigning in almost every nook and corner of this constituency and the campaigning is in the last leg.
So far Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh (UP) Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have campaigned for their candidate Dr. Jitendra Singh whereas apart from Union territory (UT) leaders of Congress party, star campaigner Raj Babbar has sought votes for Choudhary Lal Singh.
