In the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, Tariq Rashid Malik, a middle-class youngster from Pattan town in Baramulla District, has emerged as a bold and influential voice for the younger generation. A political analyst, columnist, TV debater, and Sufism expert, Tariq Rashid has captured the attention of both the public and political elite with his unwavering commitment to nationalism and mainstream integration.
Tariq Rashid’s journey into the political arena began in 2013 when his social skills were recognized as the young activist and his relentless efforts to bring alienated youth into the mainstream. Despite coming from a non-political family with limited resources, Tariq Rashid’s dedication, oratory skills, and active involvement on the ground earned him the admiration of youth.
Tariq Rashid, a staunch nationalist, vehemently opposed Er. Rashid’s Rai Shumari ideology and sympathies towards secessionist forces. He forms his own youth oriented organization i.e “Youth effort team “ with the aim to instill the idea of nationalism and the integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the Union of India, thus beginning a new chapter of pro-nationalist activism.
Launch of “Make A Change” and public debates
Tariq Rashid’s commitment to modernizing political discourse in Kashmir led to the creation of “Make A Change” (MAC), a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering open political debates. Under the banner of MAC, Tariq Rashid organized the first open-sky debates in Srinagar, involving top-notch figures from across Jammu and Kashmir. These debates, a first in the history of Kashmir, invited participation from all sections of society and heralded a new era of political engagement.
Influence and Recognition
Tariq Rashid’s activism and bold stance on issues concerning Kashmiri youth have made him a prominent figure within the security grid and among observers of mainstream politics. His suggestions have led to the Chinar Corps organizing numerous symposiums, seminars, and debates, both within and outside the BB Cantt, with Tariq Rashid often being the central speaker.
His reputation as a fearless debater was further cemented when he vociferously confronted high-profile figures such as Arif Alvi, Governor of Kerala, and Mohan Bhagwat, RSS Chief, during a seminar in Mumbai. Similarly, his intense debate with the then-MI Chief General KJS Dhillon at a conference in Somnath Hall showcased his ability to challenge authority and advocate for the youth’s issues.
Research and Groundwork
As the Founder and Director of “Research Room: Centre for Public Policy Research & Analysis, J&K,” Tariq Rashid has continued to assess the ground situation in the valley through rigorous research and fieldwork. His fearless approach and stronghold in his home constituency of Pattan have made him a formidable political force, capable of influencing election outcomes.
The key player of Pattan constituency
Tariq Rashid’s impact on the political dynamics of Pattan has been profound. His unexpected support for Er. Rashid in recent elections unnerved top politicians like Imran Reza Ansari, showcasing his ability to shift consolidated vote banks. As a result, Tariq Rashid has emerged as a key player in the Pattan Assembly segment, with his participation in elections potentially altering the political landscape.
Conclusion
Tariq Rashid Malik’s journey from a middle-class youngster to a prominent political voice in Jammu and Kashmir is a testament to his dedication, nationalism, and fearless advocacy for the youth. His influence in Pattan and beyond marks him as a dark horse in the political arena—one whose actions and decisions cannot be ignored. As he continues to champion the cause of nationalism and modern political engagement, Tariq Rashid remains a pivotal figure in shaping the future of Jammu and Kashmir.
