Rajouri, Jan 20: A protest led by two Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), Muzaffar Iqbal Khan from Thannamandi constituency and Choudhary Mohd Akram from Surankote constituency was held in Surankote on Monday. The protest aimed to gather support for a Signature Campaign that calls for the restoration of the statehood status of Jammu and Kashmir. Approximately 4,000 to 5,000 people joined the demonstration, showing their desire for their region to regain its former status.
During the event, participants signed a memorandum that was later submitted to the District Magistrate’s office.
“We want their statehood status back. This restored status would mean more local control and governance for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, which they believe is essential for their development and rights, the protestors said.
The MLAs voiced their frustration about the current situation. They reminded everyone that Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised to restore statehood after elections. However, they pointed out that this promise has not yet been fulfilled, and this has led to growing anger within the community. They called this delay a sign of arrogance from the central government towards the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Previously, MLA Muzaffar Iqbal Khan had organized a similar signature campaign in Rajouri, indicating a growing movement for statehood in the area. Both MLAs are hopeful that their continued efforts will bring attention to their demands and that the central government will listen to the voices of the people.
