Srinagar, Mar 29: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday called for putting an end to the recurring cycle of mourning in Jammu and Kashmir.
Talking to reporters after paying tributes to Head Constable Jagbir Singh, who died in the Kathua encounter, Omar said, “The identity of the terrorists involved remains unknown. However, based on past incidents, it’s suspected that a new group has infiltrated into the region.”
“I believe a new group has entered this part of the region, and fortunately, they fell into the hands of the police; otherwise, they could have caused significant damage. Our four brave police personnel have sacrificed their lives, but in doing so, they have saved many innocent lives,” he said.
The Chief Minister assured that investigative agencies would thoroughly probe the matter and reiterated that the “government is committed to assist the families of the martyrs.”
Asked about the recent surge in attacks in the Jammu division, Omar pointed out that similar incidents, including the attack on yatris in Reasi, have occurred in recent years. “The reason behind this surge is the shifting of forces from Jammu to Ladakh following China’s attempted incursion into Indian territory. Since we could not withdraw forces from Kashmir, this relocation created security gaps, which will be addressed gradually,” he said.
Earlier, the Chief Minister paid tribute to Head Constable Jagbir Singh, acknowledging his bravery and dedication. “His courage and commitment to duty will always be remembered. May his soul rest in peace,” the Office of the Chief Minister, J&K, posted on X.
Later, he visited the families of Balvinder Singh, Tariq Ahmad, Jaswant Singh, and Jagbir Singh, offering his condolences and assuring them of the government’s support. “Their sacrifice is etched in our hearts forever. We stand with their families in this hour of grief,” he wrote in a social media post. (KNO)
