Jammu, May 29: Border Security Force (BSF) Director General Daljit Singh Chaudhary on Thursday toured the shelling-affected areas of Poonch district to evaluate the situation on the ground.
Chaudhary, accompanied by senior police officials, visited key locations including Gurdwara Singh Sabha and Geeta Bhawan — both of which suffered damage during the recent cross-border hostilities. He inspected the destruction caused to civilian properties and religious places and held detailed interactions with BSF personnel stationed in the region.
The DG’s visit comes just a day before Home Minister Shah is scheduled to begin his two-day tour of the Jammu region starting Friday. During his stay, Shah will visit religious sites, meet the families affected by the recent shelling, and interact with BSF troops deployed in the border belt.
Poonch district bore the brunt of Pakistani shelling and drone attacks between May 7 and 10, witnessing 14 of the 28 total civilian fatalities reported during that period. The skirmishes followed India’s launch of Operation Sindoor, a precision strike campaign targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), carried out in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 Indian lives.
In retaliation, Pakistan attempted strikes on Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10, prompting a swift and strong counter-offensive by Indian forces. The escalation ended on May 10, after both sides reportedly reached an understanding to de-escalate tensions along the border. (KINS)
