Srinagar, May 31: In observance of World No Tobacco Day, the Director of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Prof. Mohammad Ashraf Ganie, on Saturday said that the institute will launch a well-structured programme against smoking and other social evils.
Speaking to the media, he said that tobacco use remains one of the leading preventable causes of death. SKIMS is committed to spearheading awareness and outreach initiatives, and as part of this commitment, a structured campaign will be launched to combat smoking and associated social issues.
The institute will soon roll out a comprehensive anti-tobacco programme aimed at tackling this pressing public health concern through sustained education, community engagement, and clinical support, he said.
He also said that behavioral change and the adoption of healthy lifestyle choices are essential in reducing tobacco-related illnesses.
“The upcoming initiative is expected to include targeted awareness campaigns, cessation support services, and collaborative efforts with schools, colleges, and civil society groups to reduce tobacco consumption—particularly among the youth,” he added. (KNS)
