In a world where people are often expected to pick one path and stick to it, Khushboo Zulfi defies the norm. A passionate teacher by profession, a relentless trekker by passion, and an advocate for women’s empowerment by mission, Khushboo’s journey is one of transformation, resilience, and inspiration.
Her story begins in the heart of Srinagar at the very place that shaped her formative years — Presentation Convent School. Years later, she returned not as a student but as a teacher, dedicating her time and energy to nurturing young minds.
“Teaching isn’t just a profession for me; it’s my passion,” Khushboo reflects. “I’m a bit of a workaholic — I pour my heart into everything I do and constantly strive for excellence.” Her commitment to education spans over five years now, during which she has not only taught curriculum but also become a mentor, a guide, and a role model for her students.
But what makes Khushboo’s story truly remarkable is what lies beyond the classroom. Once weighing 85 kilograms and struggling with fitness, she never imagined herself scaling alpine heights. She was always the ‘fat’ one, never the ‘fit’ one. Yet something shifted during her college years. A personal decision to change her lifestyle led her to healthy eating, regular workouts, and daily treadmill runs. Over 1.5 years, she lost 30 kilograms — but more importantly, she gained confidence, mental clarity, and a deep connection with herself.
Even after the physical transformation, the mountains seemed out of reach. Trekking was never in her plan. She would go on small hikes like to Shankaracharya, but I was always at the back, panting, doubting herself . The turning point came four years ago when her younger sister urged her to join a trek to Lidwas. Filled with hesitation but willing to try, Khushboo took the plunge. She not only completed the trek but impressed the trek leader with her determination. That small recognition became the spark she needed — a spark that soon grew into a burning passion.
Since then, Khushboo has trekked to more than 40 alpine lakes across Kashmir — some serene, some challenging, each one a testament to her resilience. Every lake has a story. It’s not just the destination; it’s the journey, the silence, the realization that you are capable of more than you ever imagined. Her goal now is to complete 50 treks by the end of this year — a milestone that once seemed impossible.
Yet for Khushboo, trekking isn’t just a personal pursuit. She sees it as a platform for change. Deeply aware of the societal limitations placed on women, especially in the context of adventure and travel, she began organizing treks for women, encouraging them to embrace the outdoors without fear or hesitation.
“We are not weak. We are far stronger than society gives us credit for,” she said. Her group is more than a trekking circle; it’s a support system, a community that uplifts, empowers, and breaks stereotypes one summit at a time.
Khushboo’s leadership isn’t confined to the mountains. A talented public speaker and debater, she has represented her state in numerous competitions at both state and national levels. One of her most defining moments came when she addressed over 10,000 attendees at the Indian Student Parliament in Pune. “It still gives me goosebumps,” she said. “Standing there, sharing my voice, I realized how powerful words can be.”
A creative soul, she also finds solace in painting — a hobby that offers a different kind of escape and expression. Her curiosity and courage have also taken her beyond borders. A solo work trip to Japan opened her eyes to the beauty of independence and self-reliance. “It was life-changing,” she said. “Being in a foreign country, navigating everything on my own — it taught me that I can handle anything.”
Khushboo’s life is a balancing act of classrooms, trail paths, canvases, and public stages — each space contributing to the woman she is becoming. Her story is not just about physical transformation or adventurous achievements, but about personal evolution, and the will to inspire others through lived experience.
She is still climbing, still learning, still evolving — both literally and metaphorically. Through it all, her hope is to inspire others, especially women, to rise, to explore, and to believe in their own strength.
Khushboo Zulfi’s journey is a celebration of inner strength, self-discovery, and purposeful living. Whether she’s teaching students, climbing peaks, addressing a crowd, or encouraging a fellow woman to take her first step into the wild — she is, in every sense, a trailblazer.
