Srinagar, Nov 19: Gurpurab, the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Devji, was on Friday celebrated with religious fervor across Jammu and Kashmir.
The main function was held at Gurdwara Chatti Padshahi at Rainawari here where hundreds of Sikhs from across Kashmir participated in special prayers.
Guru Nanak Sahib (the founder of Sikhism) was born on 15th April, 1469 at Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi in the present district of Sheikhupura in Pakistan, now Nanakana Sahib.
Special ‘langar’ were also organized for the devotees in Gurdwaras. Similar celebrations were also held in other local Gurdwaras including Jawahar Nagar, Allochi Bagh, Barzulla, Tral, Rangreth, Pattan and Baramulla and others.
Gurdwaras were beautifully decorated to mark the occasion.
Sikh community had also illuminated their respective houses in the evening.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Director General of Police and several political leaders including former chief ministers greeted Sikh community on the eve of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birth day and prayed for the peace and prosperity of J&K.
On the auspicious occasion, Sinha paid obeisance at Gurudwara Sahib, Chand Nagar and prayed for sustained peace, prosperity, happiness and well-being of all.
He said that Guru Nanak Dev Ji placed the service of the people as the first and foremost duty of human beings. The divine Guru believed and propagated selfless service as a priceless virtue. Every single word of his teachings is as relevant today as it was 500 years ago, he added.
The teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji are showing way to the entire humanity for the last 500 years, the Lt Governor said. (KNO)
