Shopian, Nov 24: The residents of Chotipora village in Imamsahib hamlet of South Kashmir’s Shopian district are facing acute shortage of drinking water for the last several years.
The residents of the area said that there has been an acute shortage of drinking water in the area since the last five years as the pipeline laid in the area has got damaged.
Over 100 hundred households are forced to drink contaminated water since the last five years as authorities have failed to replace the pipeline which was laid some 25 years before.
“We were getting water from Malikgund reservoir but the pipeline is totally damaged due to which no water reaches us,” Asif Ahmad, a local resident said.
He said that 90 percent of the water gets wasted due to leakages and hardly 10 percent of water reaches the village which is taken by the people who are close to the reservoir.
“We have taken this issue in notice of higher ups several times but to no avail as authorities have failed to take cognizance of the issue,” locals said.
They requested higher ups to look into the matter at an earliest so that they can heave a sigh of relief.
An official of the Jal Shakti Department said that process of procurement process of new pipeline has been started and very soon under the Jal Jeevan Mission new pipeline would be installed in the area.
