Drinking water shortage, power cuts hit Sopore villages

Sopore, Dec 4: The residents of Warpora area in Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have been reeling under acute shortage of water and electricity for the past many weeks, causing hardships to the locals.
While complaining about the issue, the locals said the residents of Warpora, Hathlangoo and adjoining areas are facing immense problems due to severe shortage of water and electricity in this harsh winter.
They said that the residents were forced to drink contaminated water of streams owing to acute shortage of safe drinking water.
The locals also said that they have to bear with long power cuts during the day and has caused great inconvenience leaving them helpless.
Member of civil society Warpora, Mohammad Samandar said that they are facing hardships due to unscheduled power cuts during this harsh winter and they are continuously pleading before the higher-ups in this regard.
“While the authorities earlier had assured us to rectify the problem at the earliest, but it only proved a hoax,” he said.
The civil society president, G M War said that the water they take from the stream is unhygienic which can have an adverse impact on the health of consumers while the concerned authorities never paid heed to their requests.
Locals requested the higher ups to look into the matter and solve their genuine demands at an earliest so that they can heave a sigh of relief
Meanwhile, an official from Jal-Shakti department Sopore gives assurance that the work on the project of water supply and pipelines in the area will be started soon. Regarding Power cuts, the PDD official assured that he will look into the matter.
