Baramulla, Mar 16: Continuing its efforts to eradicate the menace of drug abuse and to educate the youth about its ill consequences, the District Information Centre (DIC) Baramulla in collaboration with Police Drug De-addiction Center Baramulla and National Service Scheme (NSS) Government Degree College Baramulla Wednesday organized a daylong seminar on ‘Drug Abuse’.
A huge number of students, civil society members and religious heads among other prominent stakeholders showed their participation.
The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Bhupinder Kumar presided over the seminar as the chief guest whereas SSP Baramulla Rayees Mohammad participated as the guest of honour.
A series of lectures were delivered by the resource persons apart from college students who highlighted several aspects associated with drug addiction and the required remedial measures that need to be taken to prevent our youth from this hazard.
The chief guest, in his address complimented the organizers as well as the participants’ and highlighted the need to protect our young generation from the menace. He said that drug abuse poses a serious challenge to our society and urged different sections of the society to act vibrantly. He assured that every possible initiative from the district administration shall be taken to nip this menace in the bud.
Enlisting various initiatives that are being taken towards youth engagement and empowerment, DC said that the young generation is more vulnerable and the need is to target this section through their constructive engagement towards productive pursuits.
Highlighting the role of teachers, Bhupinder Kumar said that a teacher has a major role to play in this regard as he acts as a friend, philosopher and guide for a student.
Meanwhile, he stressed upon the parents to closely monitor their children whether they are indulged into fallacious activities inflicted upon them through different mediums including mobile phones, internet etc. He also urged them to let their wards choose different career avenues as it helps them to channelize their potential in a positive way.
SSP Baramulla, during his address signified the main aim of the seminar and said that lack of parental care and affection is the main cause that thrusts our youth towards drug addiction.
He also reiterated the role of the police department and said that stringent actions shall be taken against drug peddlers. He further said that eradication of drug abuse is a coordinated activity for which every stakeholder has to play its part.
Meanwhile, a short movie titled “Ujdha Chamman” was screened by Police drug de-addiction centre Baramulla which evoked quite applause from the audience.
At the conclusion, commendation certificates were distributed among the best speakers.
District Information Officer Baramulla Jahangeer Akhoon, presented the vote of thanks.
