Baramulla, May 9: The death of a woman allegedly after being beaten by husband and in-laws in Baramulla has triggered protest and drew condemnation in Kashmir.
The woman sustained critical injuries last week and succumbed to her injuries at SKIMS Soura on Sunday night.
Relatives of the deceased and locals took out a protest demanding justice. They alleged that the deceased was physically assaulted by her husband and in-laws for dowry. “If daughters are treated like this then we will never marry them,” Saleem Ahmad, one of relatives said.
“Divorce is far, far better than killing women in domestic violence. Divorce is far better than man or women beating, abusing and humiliating each other in marriage,” wrote a netizen, Rameez Makhdoomi.
“As I heard the news that Baramulla woman victim of domestic violence succumbed to the violent domestic torture at SKIMS, I still ain’t believing that how could one just beat their own to death. Incompetents find violence as last refuge & withered the life of an innocent woman,” said Sheikh Imran, another citizen.
“Heartbreaking! Pattan Baramulla woman who was brutally beaten up by in-laws dies. Exemplary punishment should be given to the culprits so nothing like this happens in the future. May Allah grant her a place in Jannat-ul-Firdous,” said Ishfaq Ahmad.
“This is really sad that this still happens in our country. Baramulla women beaten by her in-laws for dowry succumbed to her injuries caused by them. These people should be severely punished by the authorities who tortured and did this to this lady,” all India Women Congress general secretary Nagma Morarji said.
Terming the incident a ‘grave crime’, Apni Party senior vice president Ghulam Hassan Mir said that no civilized society can tolerate crimes against women.
Minutes after her death, police had constituted a special Investigation team (SIT) headed by additional superintendent Baramulla to probe into the alleged domestic violence death.
“The SIT is directed to carry out the investigation of the case on professional lines and ensure that no lacuna is left in the investigation. The team shall conclude the investigation of the case on its merits at an earliest. Besides, the progress achieved during the course of investigation be communicated to the SSP office on a weekly basis,” reads an order issued by SSP Baramulla Rayees Bhat.
