Srinagar, Jul 14: Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday accorded sanction to the creation of Department of Hospital Administration in Government Medical Colleges of Srinagar and Jammu.
According to an order, sanction has been accorded to the creation of the Department of Hospital Administration in Government Medical Colleges of Srinagar and Jammu in tune with the National Medical Commission (erstwhile Medical Council of India) and National Board of Examination (NBE) guidelines.
Meanwhile, hospital administrators have termed the decision as historic and thanked the government for fulfilling their long pending demand.
They said that the creation of the Department of Hospital Administration in GMC Srinagar and Jammu in addition to recently sanctioned Departments of Hospital Administration in GMC Udhampur and Handwara, is a landmark decision in the history of Medical Education of J&K.
They added that it will pave way for scientific management of healthcare institutions by qualified hospital administrators across Jammu and Kashmir.
“We hope that all medical colleges in the UT will soon have departments of Hospital Administration,” they said.
Meanwhile doctors across J&K said that it is a great step taken by the government as it will help in starting post graduate courses like we have in SKIMS.
“Hospital Administration Department is a backbone of healthcare in hospitals. The hierarchical system would be in place with defined roles and responsibilities,” said a senior doctor at GMC Srinagar, wishing not to be named. “The post graduate courses could start in the future developing a cadre of hospital administrators who can work in other hospitals also.”
Other doctors said that this department will be responsible for organizing and overseeing the health services and daily activities of a hospital or healthcare facility besides that they will manage staff and budgets, communicate between departments, and ensure adequate patient care amongst other duties.
They further added that this will help in coordination of hospital activities and formulating its overall politics which will have good impact on patient care. (KNO)
