Poonch, Jul 18: An army Captain and a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) were killed and four soldiers sustained injuries in an explosion that took place along the Line of Control in Mendhar sector Poonch district. The army, however, said that it was an “accidental grenade explosion.”
In an official statement, defence spokesman Jammu Devander Anand said that in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, an accidental grenade blast occurred when the army troops were performing their duties along the Line of Control in Mendhar sector of district Poonch.
“The grenade blast resulted in injuries to soldiers who were immediately evacuated by helicopter to Command Hospital Udhampur,” army said, adding that during the treatment, Captain Anand and Naib Subedar (JCO) Bhagwan Singh succumbed.
The spokesman said that deceased Captain Anand belongs to Bhagalpur Bihar and JCO Bhagwan Singh belongs to Ambedkar Nagar UP. Four injured soldiers are being treated at the army hospital.
