It has been three years since the people living in Srinagar City have been raising queries over the non-macadamization of the interior roads, which has pushed the commuters to the wall. The concerned Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has from time to time claimed that the work on the macadamization of the roads would be started shortly. However, every time, the people are being left with no other options than facing inconvenience while commuting through the already congested roads. The potholed Srinagar city roads have not been renovated for a longer period now and as a result of which the commuters have been pushed to the wall. Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu has explained in detail why the SMC has not been able to macadamize the lanes and link roads in the city. He does not seem to be happy with the way the ULBs are being handled in J&K as only functions and functionaries have been transferred in the absence of the required funds as a result it hampers the effective functioning of these bodies. The points are valid and should be replied to by the concerned administrative department and now that these matters have been put in public, people deserve to know what the matter is and how the department is going to handle the same because, the ULBs cannot be turned defunct in the absence of funds. There is a need for the administration to take note of these issues and take the necessary measures in this regard. The projects of SMC that are pending approval need to be cleared without any delay. It is a time for addressing the dearth of the concerned wing in the SMC so that the works are not hampered any further.
