A few videos surfaced on social media recently, showing how some people, despite driving the vehicles for over a decade now, are still lacking the knowledge of how the seat belt is being worn. This is the height of non-seriousness towards following the traffic norms in the Valley. Most of the commuters could be found without crash helmets, without wearing the seat belts and do away with the other mandatory traffic norms. The experts have been raising alarm from time to time with regard to the issue, claiming that the violations lead to the fatalities on the roads and it is imperative to follow the norms in letter and spirit. However, one fails to understand why the commuters, despite being challaned on almost every day are reluctant to follow the rules. These mandatory guidelines would not only save their money from challan, but also save their precious lives as well. It is the time when the family, especially the parents, have to play their pivotal role in ensuring that all the mandatory norms are followed in letter and spirit so that the loss of lives in the increasing road accidents could be prevented. The authorities concerned should also play the role in enforcing the traffic rules on the ground, while there is a need to create civic sense among the commuters so that the daily accidents are put to an immediate end and the precious lives are saved. The teachers should also encourage their students to follow the guidelines in spirit.
