Many of the government buildings across Kashmir have been abandoned for one reason or the other. Nonetheless, these constructions have turned out to be a nuisance for the public, living in the particular vicinity as the drug addicts are finding these places safer, turning these spots as the hub for the drug menace. The media has been highlighting the plights of the people from different parts of the valley in this regard wherein the locals demand the attention of the higher ups to look into the matter and put an end to such happenings at the particular places. However, these spots are turning out to be vulnerable for the people as most of the people; especially females, avoid the route where such buildings are located. One fails to understand why the administration is not taking appropriate measures to either seal these buildings for time being or ensure that no such activity is taking place in the abandoned buildings. As per the reports, in the premises of such buildings, one can find empty bottles of codeine (the most abused prescription drug) and empty strips of drugs used by the addicts, who come in the evening hours mostly and involve in drug abuse, indicating the regular presence of drug addicts in the structures. Therefore, there is a dire need to keep a close vigil on the abandoned buildings across Kashmir to ensure that the free space being given to the drug addicts is curbed well on time. The administration must also take steps to utilize the buildings meant for different departments so that the people here could heave a sigh of relief.
