Ganderbal, Nov 4: Despite the passing of more than 12 years, the water filtration plant of the Gassal area of Chattergul in district Ganderbal remains defunct, causing immense hardship to the people including those living in the adjacent areas.
According to locals, the project was sanctioned in 2010, after which the work was started and funds allocated. More than a decade has passed but the work is still incomplete.
The sarpanch of the area said the water filtration plant was supposed to be constructed at a cost of Rs 18 crore which includes laying of water supply pipes to adjoining villages. “A large amount has already been spent on the construction. Now it is being left incomplete,” he said.
The locals have also alleged that substandard material has been used in the construction of tanks. “This is one of the reasons the department is not making it functional,” a local said.
As per the residents, the project after getting completed will cater to the needs of almost 1300 households in many villages who are using contaminated water from streams and also paying fees for that.
The locals have appealed to the higher authorities to intervene and mitigate their problem.
