Srinagar, May 23: The Department of Handicraft organized a spectacular exhibition at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) Srinagar to coincide with the highly anticipated G-20 summit being hosted in the Valley for the first time.
An official said that this initiative aims to provide local artisans and craftsmen with a unique opportunity to display their exceptional talent on the international stage. “Dozens of stalls have been meticulously set up on the lush lawns of SKICC, each offering a mesmerizing glimpse into the world of Kashmiri crafts,” he said.
“Visitors to the exhibition were captivated by a diverse range of exquisite creations, including the renowned Pashmina shawls, intricate silk carpets, masterful wood carvings, delicate paper mache artwork, ornate copper utensils, and tantalizing organic foods,” the official said, adding that the vibrant hues of the Pashmina shawls, hand-woven with utmost precision, transported visitors to a world of elegance and luxury.
He further said that the paper mache artwork, with its delicate layers and vibrant colors, narrated stories of artistic heritage and creativity. “As visitors admired the shimmering copper utensils, they marveled at the skillful techniques employed by artisans, passed down through generations,” he added.
“Each creation, carefully crafted by skilled artisans, told a unique story of tradition, passion, and cultural richness, leaving a lasting impression on all who witnessed their splendor,” he said.
Adding an immersive experience to the exhibition, accomplished artisans have been invited to showcase the intricate process of crafting these cherished products to the esteemed delegates attending the G20 summit. Their skilled hands and artistic flair will unveil the hidden secrets behind the creation of each masterpiece, leaving spectators in awe.
The artisans, brimming with pride and gratitude, recognize the immense value of participating in the G20 summit. Termed the occasion as a pivotal gateway to the international market, they said it is offering their craftsmanship the global recognition it truly deserves.
They further expressed that during the showcase session of their products, several foreign guests displayed a keen interest and even purchased some items. In addition to their purchases, they also placed orders for various other products, demonstrating their enthusiasm for the exquisite craftsmanship of Kashmiri artisans.
Shahnawaz Ahmad, a Silk Carpet Expert, speaks on behalf of his fellow artisans, expressing hope that the government will continue organizing similar other events in the Valley. He believes that such platforms are invaluable for showcasing and promoting Kashmiri crafts worldwide, ultimately reaching customers in every corner of the globe.
Another talented artisan, Maqbool Jan, a papier mache artist, radiates optimism as he envisions the exposure gained from the G20 summit propelling their products to new global heights. With aspirations to create more opportunities for the local artisan community, Jan said that these events not only present a chance to sell their crafts but also introduce them to e-commerce platforms, expanding their reach even further.
Meanwhile, the Union minister of State for defence and tourism, Ajay Bhatt in a tweet said that he visited the exhibition stalls at SKICC, the G20 venue in Srinagar. “Impressed by the diverse range of displays showcasing the rich culture and craftsmanship of Kashmir. Such exhibitions provide a platform to promote local talent and create opportunities for economic growth,” he said.
