Srinagar, Aug 14: The iconic clock tower in the commercial Hub Lal Chowk has a significant clock installed on the four sides of the structure atop, has advanced clocks that have been specifically designed for the ‘Ganta Ghar’, which strikes after every hour to keep people conscious about the time amid the busiest life.
Entire Lal Chowk could hear the strike of the clocks installed on the four sides of the newly designed clock tower that was inaugurated by the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha this evening.
The state of art clocks have a display unit at the four sides and a central processing unit, showing equal time on all the sides unlike the past.
It strikes after every hour; the people in the entire Lal Chowk can hear the sound and the people remain conscious about the time, Chief Engineer, Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL), Iftikhar Kakroo said.
“The clock has been specifically designed for Ganta Ghar. The clocks have not been bought from any shop, the clocks have been made to order, the clocks have local emblem, Chinar leafs, roman numbers and many other things,” Kakroo said.
Kakroo said that the clocks are very much advanced clocks and manufactured as per the latest technology. “This has been brought from outside J&K and assembled in India only. The clocks have been brought from Medieval India—a company that manufactures clocks specifically for the clock towers,” he said, adding that the clocks are completely computerized.
“The clock has its own system; it can function for 7 hours even in power failure. The clock has Inbuilt Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), if the clock goes off in any way, it will set the time automatically,” Kakroo said.
Meanwhile, the locals including the traders welcomed the redesigning of the historic Ganta Ghar.
One of the traders, Irfan Ahmad, said that the clock has been redesigned with the historic perspective as in the digital era, the clock takes people back to the previous era. “The clocks in the previous era used to bell after every hour and the clock installed at the Clock tower is similar to that, which takes us back to the previous era,” he said.
Besides, the clock tower gives an attractive and charming look, which would attract the visitors to visit the place.
