Bandipora, Nov 20: The presence of a wild bear in Ahamshareef village in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district has instilled fear and chaos among residents, even as wildlife officials have already captured three bears over the last five days.
Residents said that the village has experienced a recent increase in the presence of black wild bears. “Over the last several days, people have been opting to stay indoors to avoid potential bear attacks,” they said, adding that Bears have been spotted in residential areas, compelling people to remain indoors.
“It appears that bears have been wandering through the villages like dogs for the past week. People are shocked by the increased frequency of their presence,” Mohammad Ayoob, a local resident said.
“Wildlife officials should take timely action before someone falls victim to these wild animals, allowing residents to breathe a sigh of relief,” he added.
“Fearful of bears, we hesitate to let our children go outside. Wildlife authorities should address this matter seriously before it becomes too late,” said Mohammad Ayoob, another resident.
Fida ur Rehman, the Wildlife Range officer in Bandipora, said the frequent sightings of black bears in the area, causing fear among the local population.
“To heighten vigilance, we remain on high alert to prevent any emergencies. In pursuit of this, we have already captured three bears in Ahamshareef village, and there is a possibility of one more bear roaming in the area,” he said.
Rehman said that residents should still take precautions when venturing out or visiting their fields.
