Need to end crime against women

The law and enforcing agencies have been working tirelessly to put an end to the crimes against the woman and other crimes as well, but the figures mentioned in a report indicate a rise in such cases across Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, mentioning that 455 kidnapping and rape cases and 63 murder cases have been reported in the past more than five years here. These cases have been registered from 2019 to 31 January 2024. It has been reported that 98 such cases have been registered in the year 2019 followed by 21 cases in the year 2020. However, in 2021, 100 cases of kidnapping and rape under crime head have been reported while 128 such cases were registered in 2022 and 100 cases in 2023 respectively. The figures indicate the grim situation on the ground on the land of sufi saints, indicating that the people are getting out of control with each passing year. At this juncture, the religious clerics as well as the government can play a key role in this regard, but one needs to take a lead and make sure that the people are made aware about the moral and religious obligations in this regard. One cannot expect an end to such cases until and unless the society witnesses a change. From the local committees to the government level, all should work in coordination to identify the elements, who are hell-bent to deteriorate the situation and make the environment worse for the womenfolk. Such cases need to be put to an immediate end, thus the government and the police administration should devise a policy to ensure a breathing space for the womenfolk.
