Traffic gridlock chokes boulevard road amid tourist surge

Srinagar, Apr 30: A year is about to pass when after years of delay, the government finally approved the much-needed upgradation of the existing footbridge near Convent School into a motorable bridge. However, no forward movement is being witnessed over the government directive made in July 2023 with an aim to address the increasing traffic congestion in Srinagar city, particularly over Abdullah Bridge.
The decision to upgrade the foot bridge and construct the vehicular overpasses had come as a response to the growing volume of traffic over Abdullah Bridge, which serves as a crucial transportation link for more than half of Srinagar. The bridge has been operating beyond its capacity, resulting in frequent traffic jams that adversely affect daily commuting for residents and commuters.
The government had last year stated that the upgradation of the existing footbridge near Convent School into a motorable bridge will significantly improve connectivity for pedestrians and provide a safer and more convenient crossing point. It was claimed to enhance accessibility for students, residents, and other individuals who rely on the bridge for their daily commute. However, a year is about to pass and that government directive has been limited to the papers only.
“The project by the government would have marked a significant step towards addressing the long-standing traffic congestion issues in Srinagar. The development and modernization of transportation infrastructure was not only ought to benefit the residents but also enhance the overall connectivity and transportation network of the city,” says an official privy to the report.
He added that the government was aiming to initiate the construction work at the earliest and complete the projects within the stipulated timeline. However, says an official, this project too seems to be shelved for unknown reasons and that commuters of the summer capital suffer for no fault.
