Srinagar, May 22: In a landmark medical achievement, the Department of Urology and the Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care at the Super Speciality Hospital, Government Medical College Srinagar, have successfully treated two infants, aged 7 and 8 months, for renal calculi using Extra Corporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL).
This groundbreaking procedure marks the first time such young patients have undergone ESWL for 10mm and 12mm renal stones at this institution. The infants, diagnosed with significant renal calculi, faced potential complications that could have severely impacted their kidney function and overall health, the hospital administration said.
The hospital said the traditional surgical approaches posed considerable risks due to the patients’ age and size. However, the multidisciplinary team of experts at the hospital opted for the minimally invasive ESWL procedure, which uses high-energy shock waves to break the kidney stones into smaller, passable fragments, it added.
Prof (Dr) Syed Sajjad Nazir, Head of the Department of Urology, led the urology team in this delicate procedure. “This successful treatment underscores our commitment to providing cutting-edge, patient-centered care. The ESWL procedure offers a safer alternative to conventional surgery, particularly for our youngest and most vulnerable patients. We are proud to have achieved such a milestone in pediatric urological care,” he said.
Prof (Dr) Hina Bashir, Head of the Department of Anesthesiology, the hospital said, ensured the infants’ safety and comfort throughout the procedure. “Administering anaesthesia to such young patients presents unique challenges, but our team’s expertise and meticulous planning were key to the successful outcome,” explained Dr Nusrat Jehan, Dr Mubashir and Dr Baby Shahnaz Jeelani from the Anesthesia Department. “Our collaborative approach with the urology department was crucial in managing these cases effectively.”
Dr Tanveer Iqbal, Associate Professor of Urology, said the procedures were completed without complications, and the infants were discharged after one day. “This success highlights the advanced capabilities of the Super Speciality Hospital at Government Medical College Srinagar and opens new avenues for treating pediatric patients with renal calculi,” he said.
Prof (Dr) Iffat Hassan Shah, Principal of Government Medical College Srinagar, termed the achievement as a “remarkable advancement for our institution and for pediatric healthcare in the region”. “It demonstrates our hospital’s capacity to handle complex and rare cases with innovative solutions. We are committed to continuing our mission of delivering exceptional medical care to all patients, regardless of age,” she said.
Dr Jahangir Bakshi, Medical Superintendent of SSH, said, “This pioneering treatment exemplifies the hospital’s dedication to excellence and innovation in medical care, setting a new standard for pediatric urology.”
The Super Speciality Hospital at Government Medical College Srinagar is a leading healthcare institution dedicated to providing top-tier medical services across various specialities. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and staffed by highly skilled medical professionals, the hospital is committed to advancing medical care and improving patient outcomes.
