The customs and rituals in the Valley have taken heavy toll on the people especially to the downtrodden section of the society. Amid the ongoing pandemic and nearly two year slump in markets across Jammu and Kashmir like other parts of the country, the people have faced enormous losses in their businesses and other occupations. The situation has added to the miseries of people belonging to poor families as the customs and rituals created by the society are depriving them from getting married at the early and proper age. It has been observed that the late marriages are becoming common with each passing year and one among the main reasons behind is the rituals and customs created by the people in the society. Shockingly, the reports quoting the health experts said that late marriages are among the main reasons behind the infertility issues, which according to them are on rise in Kashmir Valley. A doctor as per the reports has claimed that they register three cases of infertility on daily basis, which means 90 cases in a month and 1080 cases in a year. Similarly, at Valley’s lone maternity Lal Ded hospital, the number is quite high. A doctor in the hospital said the average cases will be in between 2500 to 3000 per year, which is quite alarming. A large number of infertility cases are also reported at private clinics which mostly remain undocumented. Therefore, the society needs to rise to the occasion and put an end to the rituals and customs so that the late marriages will also come to an end and the issues of infertility will also be addressed well on time.
