Admin imposes section 144 around newly restored Water bodies

Srinagar, Jul 28: The District Magistrate Srinagar Wednesday ordered imposition of section 144 around newly restored waterbodies of Srinagar district to prevent garbage throwing and pollution of rivers and streams.
The places where section 144 has been imposed include Nigeen Lake, Khushalsar, Gilsar and Nalah-e-Amir Khan.
An order issued by the District magistrate Srinagar Mohammad Aijaz, reads: “Whereas, rejuvenation of water bodies of District Srinagar viz Nigeen Lake, Khushalsar, Gilsar and Nalah-e-Amir Khan is in progress, the restoration of glory of these water bodies calls for putting in place immediate measures like banning the dumping of garbage into these water bodies.”
Officials in the Srinagar administration that that section 144 has been imposed around newly restored water bodies to stop throwing of garbage, and the move has been taken after the district administration Srinagar got complaints about people throwing the garbage into these water bodies. “There is an urgency to save the aquatic life”, the order reads.
It further reads that during the inspection of rejuvenation works it has been noticed that litter / garbage is being dumped from adjoining residential areas on the banks and into the water bodies. “Whereas, it has come to the notice of undersigned that pedestrians / general public often throw litter and garbage in and around these water bodies thus resulting in pollution. Whereas, after strenuous efforts and massive dredging exercise, the aquatic life in the above water bodies has been restored after decades,” it reads, adding that “Whereas, any deterioration in the quality of water of these water bodies may have resultant adverse impact not only on aquatic life but also on the livelihood of the community dependent upon the products like fishing, Nadru etc. Whereas, Nallah Amir Khan has been restored and further work restoration of pristine nature of the water body is in progress Whereas, there is evidence that the constant flow of effluents / pollutants into these water bodies is affecting aquatic life and its sustenance, thus calling for immediate remedial measures, Whereas, immediate remedy is required to prevent dumping of solid waste and influx of liquid waste into these water bodies and to save the newly formed aquatic life by way of imposition of ban on littering / dumping of garbage / waste into these bodies.” (KNO)
