Commuters ‘occupy’ footpaths in busy Lal Chowk

Srinagar, Jul 29: The illegal parking by the bike and Scooty riders here in the commercial Hub Lal Chowk area of Srinagar has left the pedestrians to lurch at large with local passers-by terming it to be a reason for tremendous hardships.
Witnesses said that over two dozen bikes and Scooties are being parked illegally by the commuters here in Lal Chowk area, which has pushed the pedestrians to face hardships.
“The rush of people as well as the vehicles usually remains high in the commercial Hub Lal Chowk and to walk on the footpaths are imperative for the safety of pedestrians,” Nazir Ahmad, a local pedestrian said.
However, he added that the commuters after parking their vehicles illegally on the footpaths are forcing them to risk their lives by walking on the roadsides amid the huge flow of vehicular movement.
He said that the concerned authorities have been seen taking action against the norm violators especially from the last couple of days, nonetheless, this issue seems, which is jeopardizing the lives of pedestrians, have been ignored.
Nazir along with scores of other pedestrians, passing through the road outside Makkah market here, appealed to the concerned department to ensure that the vehicles are not parked illegally on the footpaths, so that they could heave a sigh of relief.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic Srinagar City, Javed Koul, when contacted, said that they will look into the matter and will ensure that the pedestrians will not face any difficulties.
