President appoints Justice N Kotiswar Singh as SC Judge

Justice Tashi Rabistan to function as CJ of J&K HC

Srinagar, Jul 16: The President of India on Tuesday appointed Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh, Chief Justice of High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, as judge of the Supreme Court.
The Union Ministry of Law & Justice today issued a notification regarding the appointment of Justice Kotiswar Singh as judge of the Supreme Court.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh, Chief Justice, High Court of Jammu 8c Kashmir and Ladakh, to be a Judge of the Supreme Court of India, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office,” reads the notification.
With the post of CJ falling vacant, the President has appointed Justice Tashi i, seniormost pusine judge of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, as acting Chief Justice of the High Court. “In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Tashi Rabstan, Judge of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court consequent upon elevation of Shri Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court as Judge of the Supreme Court of India,” reads another notification issued by the Ministry of Law & Justice.
It is worthwhile that the Supreme Court Collegium in its July 11 resolution has recommended appointment of Justice Suresh Kumar Kait, senior judge of Delhi High Court, as Chief Justice of the High Court for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The Collegium has also recommended appointment of Justice Tashi Rabistan as Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalya on the retirement of Justice S Vaidyanathan, Chief Justice of that High Court, who is due to retire on 16 August 2024.
