The battle against drug abuse in Jammu and Kashmir has been a persistent challenge. However, amidst this backdrop of struggle and resilience, there emerges a beacon of hope i.e. sports. Sports have long been recognized globally as a powerful tool for social change and community development. In Jammu and Kashmir, where the youth are often vulnerable to the lure of drugs due to various socio-economic factors, the transformative power of sports is more pertinent than ever. The sports however, can play a crucial role in eradicating the drug menace. In the first instance, there is a need to build a healthy alternative. Sports provide a constructive and healthy alternative to drug abuse. Engaging in sports activities not only occupies the minds and bodies of young people but also instills discipline, self-control, and a sense of purpose. It redirects their energy towards positive goals and achievements, fostering a sense of accomplishment that drugs cannot replicate. It also fosters community bonds as the participation in sports encourages social interaction and fosters a sense of community among participants. Teams and clubs become a support network where individuals find camaraderie, belonging, and encouragement. This sense of belonging is crucial in preventing feelings of isolation or alienation, which can often lead young people towards substance abuse. Besides, sports also help promote physical and mental well-being. Regular physical activity through sports promotes overall well-being, both physically and mentally. It reduces stress, anxiety, and depression- factors that often contribute to the initiation and continuation of drug abuse. Healthy lifestyles built around sports create a ripple effect in communities, inspiring others to make positive choices for their own health. Therefore at this juncture, there is a need to promote sports as a catalyst for positive change and a powerful tool in the eradication of the drug menace in Jammu and Kashmir.
