Autorickshaws, the lifeline of urban mobility in Kashmir, have long provided a convenient and flexible mode of transport for residents and tourists alike. However, the absence of fare meters in these vehicles remains a significant issue, leading to frequent disputes and a lack of standardization in fares. As the government aspires to modernize the transportation infrastructure, it is imperative that fare meters become a mandatory feature in autorickshaws across the region. The primary concern with autorickshaws operating without fare meters is the lack of transparency in fare calculation. Passengers often find themselves at the mercy of drivers, who set arbitrary fares, leading to inconsistencies and, at times, exorbitant charges. Installing fare meters would standardize fares based on distance and time, ensuring a fair and transparent pricing system for all. Pertinently, the action against the autorickshaws found without the functional fare meters has been witnessed in the Valley for sometime in the past, but the drive against the violations didn’t sustain for a long. For autorickshaw drivers, fare meters could bring about a more predictable and fair earnings system. Moreover, regulated fares can lead to increased ridership as passengers feel more confident about the pricing, ultimately benefiting the drivers in the long run. The successful implementation of fare meters requires a coordinated effort between the government, autorickshaw unions, and the community. The implementation of the orders about installing fare meters is crucial to keep pace with the changes. Mandating fare meters in autorickshaws is a vital step towards creating a more transparent, fair, and efficient transportation network.
