Srinagar, Oct 9: The sounds of joy and excitement echoed through Srinagar as the Legends Cricket League marked the return of international cricket to Bakshi Stadium after more than four decades. This was not just a match; it was the fulfillment of a long-held dream for the people of Kashmir, who gathered in throngs to witness this momentous occasion.
The fans began lining up outside the stadium in the afternoon, their faces alight with anticipation to see international cricketers. People of all ages—young children and seasoned cricket lovers alike—flocked to see their favourite players in their homeland.
As the gates opened, the crowd surged into the stadium, cheers filling the air as the names of legendary players echoed throughout. For many, this was a scene the valley had not experienced in decades.
Fayaz Ahmad, a young cricket enthusiast from Srinagar, expressed his awe: “I grew up hearing stories about international matches in Srinagar, but I never thought I would witness one in my lifetime. Today, standing here in this crowd, it feels like a dream come true. The energy and excitement are overwhelming.”
The thrill continued to build as fans eagerly anticipated more cricket legends to grace the pitch. Tomorrow’s match between the India Capitals and Manipal Tigers promises to be a spectacle, with fans excited to see players like Dwayne Smith, Colin de Grandhomme, and Upul Tharanga in action.
Another fan, Sameer, said, “This is more than just a game for us. It represents the revival of our connection with the world of sports. I cannot wait to see legends like Dwayne Smith and Upul Tharanga play here, and I’m particularly excited to see the Universe Boss—Chris Gayle.”
The stadium is set to be packed as fans from all over Kashmir prepare to experience cricket at its grandest once again with the second game scheduled for tomorrow.
After the match, Indian all-rounder Kedar Jadhav, playing his first international match in Srinagar, reflected on the experience: “It is unforgettable playing here. The energy of the crowd is electric, and I invite everyone from Srinagar to come and be a part of this beautiful game.”
According to a statement from Legends League Cricket, Toyam Hyderabad registered a thrilling win, defeating Southern Superstars by 5 wickets at Bakshi Stadium. After winning the toss, Southern Superstars opted to bat first, posting a score of 153/5 in 20 overs. Hamilton Masakadza and Martin Guptill opened for Southern Superstars, with Masakadza scoring 16 and Guptill 23.
Kedar Jadhav contributed with 15 runs, while Shreevats Goswami remained unbeaten on 37. For Toyam Hyderabad, Sudeep Tyagi took 2 wickets for 22 runs, helping his team successfully chase down the target in 18.2 overs.
Abdur Razzak was the standout bowler for Southern Superstars, taking 2 wickets for 39 runs.
As cricket returns to the valley, the excitement is palpable, and the community is ready to embrace this beautiful game once more.
