Srinagar, Oct 16: A healthy spine is essential for overall well-being and quality of life, yet the increasing prevalence of sedentary lifestyles is contributing to a surge in spine-related issues, doctors said on World Spine Day.
The doctors said the spine plays a critical role as structural support by facilitating movement and flexibility while also protecting the spinal cord, which is a vital component of the central nervous system.
Dr Javaid from GMC Anantnag said the number of spine-related problems is on the rise as more people adopt sedentary habits. Common issues, he said, include lower back pain, herniated discs, scoliosis, osteoporosis and sciatica.
World Spine Day serves as a reminder for individuals to embrace healthier lifestyles to prevent these problems, he added.
Dr Mushtaq from the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK) said that understanding the risks and taking proactive measures can enhance spinal health and overall quality of life. “It is vital to spread awareness and engage in activities that promote a healthy spine, and to ensure this essential part of our body remains strong and functional throughout our lives,” he said.
To prevent spinal problems and manage existing conditions, doctors recommend a combination of lifestyle changes, exercise and proper body mechanics. Key practices include maintaining good posture, engaging in regular exercise, using proper lifting techniques, staying active, managing weight and staying hydrated.
These measures can help reduce the risk of various diseases, including spine-related issues, they said.
