Srinagar, Oct 17: Jammu and Kashmir Congress Chief Tariq Hameed Karra has emphasized that the party remains an integral part of the government despite not holding cabinet positions.
He affirmed the Congress’s commitment to ensuring the government’s success and fulfilling the promises made to the people.
“Our participation is equal to the government,” he stated, outlining the party’s intention to address contentious issues facing the populace while speaking to KNS correspondent exclusively.
Karra highlighted unemployment as the region’s most pressing issue, calling for the fast-tracking of 1 lakh vacant government positions and the introduction of sustainable livelihood schemes.
He expressed disappointment over the lack of initiative on contentious matters outside the cabinet, stating, “We wanted to have an election in the statehood, but now that the elections are over, we should at least tell them why they are being punished for their crimes.”
Another critical concern raised by Karra was the state of Darbar Move, with a pledge to restore the traditional system that had been closed under previous orders.
He reiterated the need for legislative changes to address this issue.
Turning to the electricity crisis, Karra voiced serious concerns about the impact of smart meters on household bills, which have skyrocketed from hundreds to thousands, and now to billions.
He appealed to the government to grant amnesty on electricity bills for families in the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category, citing the overwhelming financial strain this has placed on the poor. “The poor cannot tolerate all these things,” he said.
Karra also addressed the broader economic challenges faced by the state, emphasizing that J&K remains a consumer state with minimal production capacity.
He insisted on reviewing electricity fees to alleviate the burden on impoverished families and urged the government to address ration shortages, which have forced many to rely on expensive market alternatives.
In addition, he called for the prompt release of pending SRO cases and GP funds, emphasizing the need for timely payments to contractors for completed work.
“If you brought so much money, why are the contractor’s funds not released?” he questioned, highlighting the previous government’s failures.
Karra concluded by reaffirming his commitment to standing with the people of Jammu and Kashmir, stating, “Our lives and the lives of our people are very important.”
He vowed to remain engaged with the community and continue advocating for their rights and needs. (KNS)
