The academic calendar in Kashmir has been a topic of much debate in recent years, especially regarding the timing of the annual school session. Traditionally, the academic year in Kashmir followed a November session, which many believe was the most appropriate for the region’s unique weather conditions and student needs. However, this schedule was later shifted to March. But, there is now a growing call to restore the November academic session with the government stating that the decision in this regard will be taken after taking all the stakeholders on board. One of the key reasons for the November academic session’s suitability is Kashmir’s climate. The harsh winter months, particularly January and February, are marked by heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures, and frequent disruptions in daily life. Schools often close during these months due to snow-blocked roads and power outages, significantly hampering students’ education. The November session, which ends the academic year before winter sets in, allows for uninterrupted schooling and ensures that students can continue their studies in a stable environment. Switching to a November academic session also provides students ample time to prepare for crucial board and competitive examinations. Currently, the March session forces students to juggle between completing their syllabus and preparing for exams, including those conducted at the national level like NEET, JEE, and other competitive entrance tests. Restoring the November academic session in Kashmir is not just a return to tradition but a step towards creating a more efficient, weather-conscious, and student-friendly academic system.
