Doctors: The heartbeat of our healthcare system

The Legislative Assembly for the first time in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir witnessed chaos in the first four days while the clashes erupted on the fifth and last day of the proceedings as well. The unruly behavior and frequent disruptions by elected representatives take center stage in the House. The spectacle of shouting matches, walkouts, and obstructed debates has unfortunately overshadowed the very purpose for which these assemblies exist — to deliberate on matters of public importance, pass meaningful laws, and serve the needs of the people who elected these representatives. The core responsibility of any legislative body is to act as the voice of the people, to debate, legislate, and hold the government accountable. However, the public’s faith in the democratic process is eroded when the proceedings in the legislature resemble more of a circus than a forum for reasoned discourse. Disruptions in the assembly — whether through constant protests, repeated adjournments, or intentional deadlock — are not just a nuisance; they are a direct obstruction to the effective functioning of government. Such a behavior goes against the very essence of democratic governance. Assembly proceedings are meant to be an arena for constructive criticism and healthy debate, not for grandstanding or theatre. Every elected representative has been entrusted with the responsibility to work towards the public good. It is essential that they set aside partisan bickering, personal grievances, and inflammatory rhetoric in favor of substantive discussions aimed at solving the real challenges facing society today. For the sake of democracy and good governance, the assembly proceedings must remain focused, efficient, and above all, respectful of the trust placed in elected representatives. This is the only way to rebuild the public’s faith in the legislative process and ensure that the voices of the people are heard.
