The flaw readiness

The fresh snowfall has ended the prolonged dry spell in Kashmir as the snowfall turned the Valley into a white wonderland, but the issue of unplowed roads surfaced once again, revealing a deep flaw in the government’s preparedness and response to winter challenges. The delay in clearing roads, especially in rural and remote areas, underscores an ongoing neglect of basic infrastructure maintenance and threatens the livelihood and safety of the people who call this region home. Every winter, it is common to hear about the government’s grand announcements of winter preparedness, the deployment of snow-clearance machinery, and the stockpiling of essential supplies. However, the reality on the ground tells a very different story. It is not just the inconvenience of delayed travel that should be the concern, but the broader implications of such neglect. In an area like Kashmir, where winters are long and harsh, the failure to clear roads promptly can lead to severe consequences. Hospitals become difficult to reach and the economic strain on residents intensifies. For the elderly and sick, a delay in accessing medical care due to blocked roads can be a matter of life and death. After the snowfall, the government too should act and it is high time that they be held accountable for the neglect and delay in this vital service. Kashmir’s residents deserve the assurance that, in their time of need, their government will be present, prepared, and committed to their well-being.
